African masks play an important role in traditional ceremonies and dance theater. All African masks fall into one of four categories: ancestor spirits, mythological heroes, the ancestor-hero combination, and animal spirits. This comes from the Nsukka area, the northern part of the north-central Nigerian Igbo region. This region has one of the oldest traditions of making complex and diverse wooden masks.
